Spring Snow

The haunting beauty of Schubert's Winterreise finds a kindred spirit in the evocative artistry of Kabuki theatre in Spring Snow. This critically acclaimed cross-disciplinary production, inspired by the 1818 Kabuki play, Yasuna, explores the delicate balance between sorrow and solace. Featuring the exceptional talents of mezzo-soprano Fleur Barron, pianist Julius Drake, shamisen musician Hibiki Ichikawa, and actor-dancer Suleiman Suleiman, Spring Snow offers a profoundly moving theatrical experience.

Restaged at the Royal Northern College of Music, Spring Snow evolved to incorporate new layers of Japanese sound and rhythm, including the sharp pulse of hyōshigi clappers. This second staging deepened the dialogue between Schubert’s Winterreise and Kabuki, heightening its theatrical and emotional intensity.
